Diamond Earrings with gold settings

Diamonds are very beautiful stones to wear and tend to speak for themselves, but if you want to get the best out of your diamond earrings it is important that you choose the right colour metal and a setting which holds the diamonds securely but in a way that fully displays them..

Typically diamond mounts are made of precious metals like white or yellow gold or platinum. You can buy mounts made of non-precious metals but these are often non-hypoallergenic and can to react to the skin and cause irritations.

The best type of setting to make sure that your diamond earrings give off the best sparkle is the four claw setting which holds the stone securely in place yet lets the light pass right though it refracting and causing the sparkle.

Gold diamond earrings a very popular choice but there are many grades of gold:

  • 9K Gold - This grade of gold contains 37.5% gold and 62.5% other metal alloy which is the minimum amount of gold that the UK assay office will certify as gold. It is by far the most popular grade as it more affordable.
  • 9K White Gold - . White gold is simply yellow gold mixed with a white alloy (37.5% gold and 62.5% other white metal alloy) and then coated with the very hard Rhodium. Otherwise it is exactly the same as 9K yellow gold and is a very popular choice as it looks identical to Platinum and is very fashionable at the moment.
  • 18K Gold - This grade of gold weighs much more than 9K gold and makes the jewellery feel more luxurious and substantial. It is 75% gold and 25% white alloy so contains much more pure gold than 9K and is also more expensive. People with sensitive skin who are allergic to non-precious metals favour 18K gold as the alloy content is lower. For higher quality diamond jewellery 18K is the most popular choice.
  • 18K White Gold - The same as 18K yellow gold but with a white metal alloy mixed in and coated with Rhodium like 9K white gold. Cheaper than Platinum but keeps the same look and feel.
  • 24K Gold - Very popular with the Asian market and it contains 100% pure gold. As gold is a soft metal 24K is not really suitable for setting diamonds as they can fall out more easily and it is not very popular in the UK.
  • Platinum - Platinum is an expensive white metal and does not rely on Rhodium coating to make it white. Rhodium will gradually wear off (it can be easily recoated) while Platinum might only need a polish once in a while. Platinum is a much more expensive metal and is heavier than gold. It is also harder and tougher to work with which means that you will pay much more for a pair of platinum diamond earrings.
