The term Carat is more than often confused with the size of the diamond but it actually refers to the wieght of the Diamond itself. For the record 1 Carat is equal to 200 milligrams but I am sure that you don't need to know that fact!

One carat is often divided into 100 points. Therefore a 75 point diamond is actually 0.75Ct (Ct – carat) or ¾ carat diamond.

You might think that a 1Ct (one carat) diamond costs double that of a 0.50Ct (half carat) diamond but you would be wrong! Since larger diamonds are found less frequently in nature and are thus rarer, their cost will reflect that.

So although you will have in mind that carat will reflect the size of the diamond, it is actually referring to the weight of the diamond. Often this would mean the same to you but be aware that cut and mounting can make a diamond appear larger (or smaller) than its actual weight.

The word carat (spelt karat in the USA) is also confusingly used to express the purity of gold used for the mount.

When describing diamond earrings for sale, it is usual to advertise the TOTAL weight (carat) in the earrings. So ½ carat diamond stud earrings are actually 2 x 0.50Ct diamonds.
